I am a monthly OpenAI ChatGPT subscriber and was curious about the additional features, such as Canvas, that were provided. For those wondering, Canvas allows you to work collaboratively on projects with AI, offering a back-and-forth dialogue to build out your ideas. I’ve seen fun examples, like creating games and websites, which piqued my interest. I will create a future article on my Canvas experience.
Returning from a relaxing December vacation, I decided to try out Sora, a new feature added to the platform in December 2024.
What is Sora?
Sora is OpenAI’s advanced text-to-video generation model, designed to create realistic and imaginative videos from textual descriptions. Launched in December 2024, Sora allows users to input text prompts and receive corresponding video outputs. It’s available to users subscribed to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Pro plans.
The Project
I asked my two daughters to come up with a storyline. We started with a story about a fairy living in the human world in secret. She lived near an ocean—we chose Half Moon Bay as the setting. Our character, Luna, faced mean bullies in her classroom and had to put on a brave face every day.
I described this initial concept to Sora, and here’s what we received back:

How Sora Works
Sora takes your initial prompt and enhances it by adding creative details. For example, I inputted the Half Moon Bay setting, and the rest of the vision was a result of Sora’s creativity. It provides several options to choose from, allowing you to pick the one that best fits your story.
You also have the option to Edit story and add more to the storyboard.

Issues Encountered
While Sora is impressive, I noticed some quirks that need improvement:
- Random Appearances:
In one video, a random image of a girl appeared in a window. This was unexpected and gave me a real shock! I’m not sure if she is supposed to be a ghost or a nosy neighbor.

- Character Movements:
Another oddity was characters walking backward, which looked unsettling. I had not asked Sora to make the fairy character moonwalk!

Sora does offer the option to download your work as a video or GIF. For this article, I chose to download as a GIF.
Experimenting with Simpler Prompts
I decided to try something simple. I love dogs, so I went with a video of dogs playing poker

I received a couple of options and picked my favorite GIF. My favorite is the studious dog with the glasses!

Takeaway
This technology is still in its early stages, so it’s not without its hiccups. However, for anyone looking for creative inspiration, Sora is an excellent starting point. The GIFs and videos are fun and unique, and it’s especially rewarding when you involve your kids’ creativity and free thinking. Who knows? Your next idea might come from their brilliant imaginations!
